Choosing to have faith
An eternal happiness is rooted in the infinite personal passionate interest, which the individual renounces in order to become objective, defrauded of his interest by the predominating objectivity... For if passion is eliminated, faith no longer exists, and certainty and passion do not go together.
Søren Kierkegaard, Concluding Unscientific Postscript to the Philosophical Fragments
Life without passion is literally meaningless. Everything that really matters to someone is subjective; that's what “really matters” means. But just because you really care about something doesn't make it “truth.” There are objective facts and there are subjective passions. Objective facts are tools; subjective passions give you a reason to use them.
Jesus was clearly a very passionate guy. How mad do you have to be to start flipping tables over in a marketplace? Jesus's passion fueled his faith. How much faith do you need to touch people with leprosy? To walk out into the desert without any provisions? To walk into the Temple in Jerusalem and publicly call out the “powers that be” knowing that you would pay the ultimate price?
Faith requires passion, and decisiveness requires faith. If you are indecisive, you probably lack both faith and passion.
When was the last time you made a major life choice? Changing jobs, buying a house, getting married, having a baby (on purpose) – these are all acts of faith: faith in yourself, faith in your spouse, and faith in the future. If you have trouble making choices, then you probably lack passion.
Note that there is a difference between a choice and a decision. Decisions are strategic or tactical, based on objective facts and logic, but decisions presuppose a known goal. A choice is subjective, like preferring chocolate to vanilla – there's no way to point to a choice and say it's wrong. Choices are based on passion.
Faith is a choice; no amount of decision-making will give you faith. And if you aren't passionate about your beliefs, then you probably don't have any faith.
The essential secret of Christianity is that you have to choose to have faith.
